Choosing an Interior Designer

Working with design professional is the most cost-effective decision that you can make when creating your home décor. A good designer will:

  • Prevent you from making decorating mistakes (Part 1) – if you’ve ever painted a room or purchased a piece of furniture, only to realize that it doesn’t look quite the way that you had imagined, then you’ll understand why using a decorator is so important. If not, suffice it to say that after dislocating a household’s routine for days or weeks during the redecorating, proposing that the entire process be immediately repeated will not be met with warmth and approval.
  • Prevent you from making decorating mistakes (Part 2) – if you have any memory at all of the 1970s, you’ll remember that colors like “Avocado Green” and “Harvest Gold” were very popular. Within 10 years, this style was so overdone that it turned into a parody of itself, and became an icon of poor taste. You’d hate to be the one replacing all of the old toilets and sinks in your home with new “Eggplant” ones, only to discover that everyone else is ripping them out. A decorating professional will be thoroughly familiar with “what’s new”, “what’s hot”, and “what’s on it’s way out.”

Many people are intimidated by the thought of using an interior designer. They envision the classic “I Dream of Jeannie” episode called “The Mad Home Wrecker”.

san antonio interior designer(The Bellows give Tony and Jeannie a “Helasco Original” – a burping, thumping, gulping “modern art” sculpture – as a wedding present. When Jeannie and Tony pretend to be happy, the Bellows chip in with the rest of NASA and commission Helasco himself redecorate the Nelson’s home. The result is a modern art atrocity. Tony then disguises himself as a worker and destroys the horrible mess.)

They worry they’ll lose control of the décor and budget to a temperamental designer, and end up with an interior that’s totally out of sync with their aesthetic and lifestyle. While this vignette is the stuff of TV sitcoms, it really isn’t a scenario worth fearing (neither is worrying about a shark attack when swimming in the ocean).

There are, however, many things to consider when finding and working with an interior designer.
